There are around 400,00 speakers of Welsh – most of them in Wales with a small Welsh community in Patagonia. There are many people living in Wales who know a little Welsh and would like to know more. Are you one of them? Then this is the book for you. A great way to pick up new vocabulary and to consolidate structures that you’ve learnt is to read as much possible. You may not be ready to read Ieuan Glan Geirionydd just yet – but Learn Welsh With Jokes is not a bad place to start.
Learn Welsh With Jokes contains 100 jokes in easy Welsh and there is vocabulary support for the more difficult words. For example:
Bachgen: Esgusodwch fi Athro, a fyddech yn cosbi rhywun am rywbeth nad ydynt wedi gwneud ?
Athro: Na, wrth gwrs.
Bachgen: Gwych, rwyf heb wneud fy ngwaith cartref.
to punish someone – i cosbi rhywun
homework – gwaith cartref
Learn Welsh With Jokes Cartoons!
There are also some great cartoons created by the award-winning cartoonist Ilja Bereznickas from Lithuania.
“Rwyf wedi colli fy nghi!”
“Dylech roi hysbyseb yn y papur newyddion.”
“Na! nid yw’n gallu darllen.”
hysbyseb – an advertisement
The book is designed so that vocabulary that you learn early on is recycled in later jokes. As you can see, the book is not for complete beginners but you just need a smattering of Welsh to understand the jokes.
